February 2025 Monthly Meeting

SF YIMBY Monthly Meeting - February 2025

Join SF YIMBY for our February 2025 meeting! This month, at the request of many folks, we're doing something we have not done in quite a long time in person, a YIMBY 101. This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of movement, where we are now, and where we are going! If you are a newbie, it's the perfect time to jump in! If you've been around a bit, it's a great time to learn something you may not have known about our history. Come with questions, and bring a YIMBY-curious friend for this one. Programming to start around 6:30, with some light mingling before that!

Doom Loop to Boom Loop: What's In Store For 2024?

San Francisco has always been a boom and bust town. From the Gold Rush to the Great Quake and Fire, from the dot com bubble to the tech boom, this city has seen meteoric rises and stunning crashes that are woven into its history. The past few years have been no different, as COVID deeply impacted the City with many people leaving. But all indications are people are coming back because they want to be in San Francisco. What's different this time? Our city has to build a ton of new homes in the next few years and there are a lot of new laws to help lead us towards housing abundance. Come learn about what's changed this time around as we move out of the doom loop and into the boom loop

Family Housing Day at the Planning Commission

San Francisco’s next generation deserves a city they can live and thrive in, and the new rezoning map helps make that possible!

Mayor Lurie and SF Planning just released an ambitious new rezoning map that makes it easier to build more housing of all types throughout San Francisco, focusing on the Westside of San Francisco to allow more residents to age in their communities and more neighbors to enjoy.

Our rezoning plan will build housing for the next generation; it will build housing to keep our families together; it will build housing for our chosen families and community.

To celebrate, we're going to Planning to show our support!

Join us for Family Housing Day at the Planning Commission! Bring the whole family! Grandparents, kids, and those you share space and community with. Let’s celebrate our voices and to show why building more homes keeps our communities whole. Show up for housing in Central SoMa!

Supervisor Dorsey has continued the work he started with Mayor Breed and the Office of Economic & Workforce Development (OEWD) on legislation to allow for increased residential development as a part of the Central SoMa plan. That plan was originally slated to include 2/3rds commercial development for the larger buildings. Now they are changing that threshold to increase the flexibility and build more homes! This is precisely the creative thinking we need to solve our housing shortage.

Show up on Monday, March 3, at 1:30 pm to comment in support of this legislation. It's the first item on the agenda, so it should be called on time.

Support Candlestick at Planning

We've had a petition running for Candlestick, and now it's finally at Planning. It's time for us to show up and say yes to housing along with our partners at the Housing Action Coalition, GrowSF, TogetherSF Action, and Bay Area New Liberals

We expect this item to be called around 12:30 - 12:45 but that is subject to change. RSVP or following along in the SF YIMBY Slack for details.

Here are some of the details from the original petition to help craft public comment:

This transformative plan is dedicated to revitalizing the Candlestick Point area and restoring it to its former glory. This ambitious project is designed to bring significant benefits to the Bayview community and San Francisco by addressing critical needs and fostering sustainable growth.

Some of the highlights include"
1. Housing Solutions: San Francisco faces a severe housing crisis. By shifting parcels to prioritize housing development, Build Candlestick Now! aims to provide affordable and diverse housing options for our growing population. This will help alleviate the housing shortage and ensure that more residents can call San Francisco home.

2. Innovation Center: The establishment of an innovation center at Candlestick Point will create a hub for technological advancement and entrepreneurship. This center will attract businesses, create jobs, and position our city as a leader in innovation and economic development.

3. Job Creation: The development of Candlestick Point will bring thousands of new jobs to the area. From construction to long-term employment opportunities in the innovation center, retail, and services sectors, this project will stimulate our local economy and provide valuable employment opportunities for our residents.

4. Infrastructure and Transportation Improvements: Upgrading infrastructure and enhancing transportation options are critical components of the plan. These improvements will ensure efficient connectivity and accessibility, making it easier for residents to commute, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting the use of public transportation.

5. Land Use Enhancements: Thoughtful land use planning will ensure that Candlestick Point becomes a vibrant and dynamic part of our city. This includes mixed-use developments that combine residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, creating a thriving community for all.

6. Waterfront Activation: Our southeastern bay waterfront has immense potential to be a dynamic and beautiful space. The plan includes restoring the Candlestick site to its former glory, providing recreational opportunities, and creating a scenic waterfront destination for residents and visitors alike.

7. Addressing Navy Delays: The Build Candlestick Now! initiative also seeks to address and overcome delays caused by the Navy in transferring and remediating the land on the Shipyard. These delays have stalled progress and hindered the potential benefits of the project even though the Candlestick land parcels do not have the environmental issues on the larger project site. Supporting this initiative means advocating for timely action and accountability from all stakeholders to move the project forward.

What's next? We need your support. We call on all residents of San Francisco to stand with us in supporting Build Candlestick Now! This initiative represents a unique opportunity to address pressing
issues and enhance our community's quality of life.

By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for:
  • Increased housing availability and affordability
  • Economic growth through innovation and job creation
  • Improved infrastructure and transportation systems
  • Thoughtful and sustainable land use including climate change sustainability
  • The revitalization of our southeastern bay waterfront
  • Job creation and economic stimulation
Together, we can make a difference. Let's work towards a brighter future for Candlestick Point and all of San Francisco.

Stonestown at Land USe

The Housing Action Coalition and SF YIMBY are proud to support the exciting proposal to develop a mixed-use neighborhood at Stonestown Mall. The project will bring 3,500 well-designed, transit-oriented homes to the west side of San Francisco! There are only a couple more stops after it passed Planning back in May. It's going to the Board of Supervisors Land Use and Transportation Committee on July 8th. Come to Planning to show your support for this huge opportunity to reshape the mall and create a new neighborhood with thousands of homes

We're keeping tabs on where it will be on the agenda to provide a more precise start time and will update as we get closer.

Some of the project's highlights include:

1. Exemplary Land Use - The project will innovatively transform the current Stonestown Mall by developing an underutilized surface level parking into housing, retail space, and open space.  The project will also make substantial enhancements to the surrounding streets to improve traffic flow, biking safety, and walkability.

2.Increased Density - The project will add 3,500 new homes to San Francisco. This will include a wide variety of homes ranging from townhomes to dense multi-story buildings with a mix of rental, for-sale, market rate, and affordable housing options.

3. Transit Rich Location - The site is well-served by multiple bus lines, and is adjacent to the Muni M line. The project will include substantial bicycle parking, underscoring a commitment to environmentally friendly forms of transportation.

You can learn about the project here.

Thank you for signing the petition and voicing your support for this exciting new project!
